February 2019 Trestleboard
George Washington, one of the most influential founding fathers of our beloved country, wore many hats throughout his historical life. He is one of many famous Masons whose birthday we are celebrating in February: 287 years old! When people asked him about which he enjoyed the most, his presidency or military career, he would say that he enjoyed being a farmer. While many books have been written about George Washington, one of my favorites is The Military 100 by LT Col. Michael Lee Lanning. Manning ranked Washington No. 1 out of 100. His successful military strategy bankrupted the Kingdom of Britain and paved the way for the colonies to form their own country. Masonry had been a part of his life since the age of 20. He was initiated an Enter Apprentice on November 4, 1752, passed to the Fellow Craft degree on March 3, 1753, and was raised to the Master Mason degree August 4, 1753. I truly believe that Masonry made him an even greater man, soldier, surveyor, farmer, politician, leader, and military officer. He is quoted at King David’s Lodge in Newport, Rhode Island in 1790 saying, “being persuaded that a just application of the principles, on which the Masonic Fraternity is founded, must be promotive of private virtue and public prosperity, I shall always be happy to advance the interests of the society, and to be considered by them as a deserving Brother.”
Congratulations to Brothers Richard Melady, Michael Sparrow, and Stephen Carlson on being declared proficient for their Entered Apprentice degree, as well as, being elected to be advanced to the Fellow Craft Degree. They will be receiving their Fellow Craft Degree on the 2nd Stated Communication (February 21st). I would also like to congratulate Brothers Brian Umbarger, Brenton Moland, and Tim McDowel on being passed to the Fellow Craft Degree.
Denver Lodge No. 5 had an official visit to Albert Pike Lodge No. 117 on January 9 in which the lodge put on a Fellow Craft Degree. Many Brothers attended the Knights of Saint Andrew’s Burn’s Supper at the Denver Consistory on January 19. It was a huge success! The Burn’s supper had excellent food including the tasting of haggis, music of bag pipes, performance of Scottish songs, and Burns poetry.
February will be a busy month! Our first Stated Communication on February 7 will feature Brother Rick Haskel . He will give a lecture on Psalm 133. Brother Rick is a past master of Rob Morris Lodge No. 92 and Pythagoras Lodge No. 41 in Denver. He is also a District Lecturer and current sitting Junior Warden of Enlightenment Lodge No. 198. Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. and Lodge will open at 7:30 p.m. Please RSVP to Brother Michael Rotert, J.W. Also, the 160th Anniversary Challenge Coins are in! Denver Lodge No. 5 will be visiting Paul Revere Lodge No. 130 on February 20. Worshipful Brother Bobby Juchem will be hosting a table lodge and will feature a discussion on Paul Revere. Please RSVP with Brother Michael Rotert, J.W.

Happy New Year! I hope that each of you had a very blessed holiday and New Year. I would like to congratulate our 2019 officers! I’m very honored and excited on working with you this year! I have many fun events planned and look forward to implementing them. I would like to thank Worshipful Brother Kory Wilson for his great work in the 2018 year!
The 2019 year will be the 160th anniversary of Denver Lodge #5. I have designed a coin which is unique for the 160th anniversary which every brother will be given. My theme this year is Faith, Hope, and Charity: Faith in God, Hope of immortality, and Charity to all mankind. I’m looking forward to helping support charities this year, specifically the Saint Francis Center.
January will be a very busy month! Our first Stated Communication is January 3rd which will include Entered Apprentice proficiencies. Please come and support our young brothers who continue to seek light. Brother Secretary will be giving a short lecture on Masonic Etiquette. There will be an officers meeting at 6:00 PM in the conference room. Dinner will be at 6:30 PM and lodge will open at 7:30 PM. Please RSVP with Brother Michael Rotert, JW if planning on attending.

January 19th: The annual Burn’s Dinner will be at the Denver Consistory. We have sponsored 6 tables this year which our reservations are full. If you have not had the experience of trying Haggis, this would be the perfect opportunity! January 24-26th will be the annual Grand Lodge meeting at the hotel Elegante in Colorado Springs. Your principal officers will be in attendance and will be giving a report.

Germania 46 will be performing an EA degree on Friday, April 12th at the Welton Masonic Temple and we will have a Joint Communication table lodge with Union 7 the following night to discuss the differences of a Scottish Rite Lodge vs. our Blue lodge. Greetings Brethren,
I’d like to first say “thank you” to everyone from Denver Lodge No. 5 for making the trip to Cheyenne Lodge No. 1 for their 150th year anniversary. A truly delightful time was had by all.
The first recorded meeting of Freemasons in what was to become Denver Lodge No. 5 was held on November 3rd, 1858. To commemorate that glorious time, we celebrate our first meeting in November as our Heritage Night and Candlelight Degree.
This year’s Heritage Night falls on November 1st.Lodge will open on the EA degree at 5:30 pm to take care of business. We will break for dinner at 6:30 pm and afterward, return to Lodge to confer a special Entered Apprentice Degree done by candlelight to recreate the atmosphere our Founding Brethren would have experienced in 1858. We also have the honor of hosting the Most Worshipful Grand Master, Phil Moss and his Officers for their official Grand Lodge visit. As in last year’s Candlelight Degree, while not required, we encourage the Brethren to come dressed in their finest Victorian-era fashion for our period correct costume contest. The winner for “Best Dressed” will have their Denver Lodge No. 5 dues paid for 2019. We encourage everyone to attend this fun annual event. Please RSVP with our Jr. Warden Kevin Trabert.
Our second Stated Communication will be held on November 15th. We will hear proficiencies from two hard working Entered Apprentices. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm and Lodge will follow at 7:30 pm. Please plan on attending to support these Brothers as I’m sure we can all sympathize with how nervous they may feel. RSVP with our Jr. Warden Kevin Trabert.

Greeting from the East Brethren,
The year is flying by, but we still have work in the quarries to attend to.
Our first Stated Communication is on October 4th. We will have the great privilege of hearing our Past Master, Van Troi Perozo, give a lecture on the Art of Meditation. We all know our Worshipful Brother, so we should be in for quite the treat. This is one you don’t want to miss. Please plan accordingly and RSVP with our Jr. Warden Kevin Trabert. Dinner will be served at 6:30, and the lodge will open promptly at 7:30.
On October 15th we will visit Rocky Mountain Lodge No. 1 which is located at Colfax and Ash St. in Denver. Lodge will open at 7:30 pm with dinner to follow. This meeting is open to all Master Masons. If you plan on attending, please RSVP with our Jr. Warden Kevin Trabert so Rocky Mountain No. 1 can plan accordingly.
Brethren, our second Stated Communication is on October 18th. We will be having an open discussion on the importance of guarding the West Gate and what that means to us. RSVP with our Jr. Warden Kevin Trabert. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm and the lodge will promptly open at 7:30 pm.
This year’s Masonic Symposium will take place on October 13-14 at the Highland Masonic Lodge, 3550 N. Federal. If you’ve never attended a Masonic Symposium, I highly recommend you do. It will be two full days of Masonic Education that is sure to enlighten. More details will be available at our next lodge meeting.

Greeting from the East brethren,
As the heat of the summer months is slowly dwelling down, it’s time for us the head back into the quarries of Masonry.
Our first Stated Communication in August is on August 16th. Dinner will be served and 6:30, and Lodge will open promptly at 7:30. We will be reading the results of two investigations and clearing up any business from the first part of the year. Please RSVP with the Jr. Warden, Kevin Trabert.
August 18th is the annual Eastern Star Masonic Picnic and car show. There will be great food and music. Also, if you have children please bring them as there will be plenty of fun activities for them to enjoy. The address for the Eastern Star Masonic Retirement Campus is 2445 S. Quebec St., Denver. The picnic and car show will begin at 11 am and will to wrap up around 2 pm. Please plan on attending.
Our first Stated Communication in September will be September 6th. We will be conferring the Entered Apprentice degree upon two well-deserving candidates. Dinner will be served at 6:30, and Lodge will promptly be opened and 7:30. Please plan on attending, as these two candidates receive light in masonry. Please RSVP with the Jr. Warden, Kevin Trabert.
On Saturday, September 8th, we will have a Special Communication to confer the Entered Apprentice degree upon three very well deserving candidates. Lodge will open at 9 am with the degrees to start immediately after. Lunch to follow. Please plan on attending, and Please RSVP with the Jr. Warden, Kevin Trabert.
Our second Stated Communication in September will take place on the 20th. We will be conferring the Master Mason Degrees upon Brother Will Berrett. As all Master Masons remember that joyous time, let us all plan on attending and supporting our Brother. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm and Lodge will promptly open at 7:30. Spring has again sprung before us Brethren, and let us plan accordingly.
I want to first congratulate the brothers that received their Fellow Craft degree at the joint communication with Highlands 86. The degree team again excelled and a good Masonic day was had by all.
Our first stated communication April 5, we will be conferring the Entered Apprentice degree upon three well-deserving candidates. The lodge will open early at 5:30 to ensure we have ample time to devote to the candidates. Please plan accordingly, your attendance will be greatly received as these candidates are prepared to receive light. RSVP with Jr. Warden Kevin Trabert.
Brethren we will be visiting East Denver Lodge # 160 on April 11. Lodge opens at 6:30 and they are located at 1370 Grant St. the southeast corner of 13th and Grant. After their stated communication, they typically go out to dinner. Please RSVP with Sw. Curt Robinson.
Our stated communication on April 19th we will have an open discussion on the True Passion of life. We will discuss what we as Mason are truly here to do. This will be open to all degrees. We will also hear Brother TJ Ward give his account on this subject. Please RSVP with Jr. Warden Kevin Trabert.
Brethren our scholarship application deadline has been extended to April 17, so if you know a well deserving student let’s get those applications in.

First and foremost I would like to congratulate Brothers Gareth Alexander, Will Barry, and Ben Allen on the completion of their Entered Apprentice proficiencies. Excellent job Brothers. They will be receiving their Fellow Craft degree on March 10 at Highlands Masonic Temple. More info coming soon.
As we get started with the month of February, our first Stated Communication on February 1st will include proficiencies on the Entered Apprentice Degree and the Master Mason Degree. These Brothers have worked extremely hard to get this done, let’s make sure we’re there to fully support their hard work. Dinner at 6:30 pm and Lodge will open at 7:30 pm. Brethren, if any of you would like to participate in this year’s Polar Plunge, time is running out. The plunge is March 3rd at the Boulder Reservoir. If you would like to participate, please get in contact with Worshipful Brother Tom Shotts for more information. I would like not to have to withdraw our participation in the plunge this year, but we need more Brothers to make it happen.

Greeting from the East Brethren
January is again upon us, the mark of a new year and new opportunities.
I would first like to congratulate Worshipful Brother Pablo Colomban on a excellent year in Masonry. You are the perfect example of what Freemasonry is in Colorado. Great job, and to the 2018 officer line thank you excepting your new positions. I can’t wait to get to work with such a fine group of brothers.
As we get started this month, our first meeting on January 4th we will have proficiencies from some very hard working brothers who have put in a lot of work to get this done, let’s make sure to be there to help them receive More Light.
As it was mentioned in the installation the theme for this year is Brotherly Love. Our meeting on January 18th will be an open discussion on what Brotherly Love truly means in Freemasonry. Please join us for this discussion.
January 25 -27 will be the annual Grand Lodge meeting. Your principal officers will be attending, and will return with a full report.

Greetings from the East,
It is with a heavy heart that I start typing my final Trestleboard for Denver Lodge No.5. I’m reminded of the fable of “Solomon’s Seal” where a sultan requests King Solomon to bring him a sentence that would have the ability to make the happy man sad and the sad man happy. Solomon responds with, “This too shall pass”.
And while I’ll be sad to descend those three steps in the East a final time, I take solace in the amazing, forward-thinking leadership Denver Lodge No. 5 has in its future. I’ve had the pleasure of working with these Brothers throughout the past years and I have great trust in handing over the keys.
It has been a great honor serving the Lodge all these years and in particular, serving as Worshipful Master. I had a great time and I hope you all did as well. We were busy with a lot of work, but there were plenty of fun extracurricular activities to join in on as well. November was no exception. We received the Grand Master’s representatives at our annual Heritage Night. It was great seeing so many faces in attendance.
I was extremely excited at how well our first “Heritage Raising” turned out! Not only was the degree work exceptional, but I feel that the theme and general ambiance of the night was a hit! Thanks again to R.W.B. Kevin Townley for the amazing banjo performance and congratulations to Bro. Sean Murphy and Bro. James Bechtel for winning the costume contest. Most importantly, congrats to the four Brothers Raised that evening, Brothers James Bechtel, David Bralish, Dan Rosales, and Jordan Rice. It wouldn’t have been so successful without everyone’s participation!
Bro. Jonny Aderhold treated us to a D.U. Pioneers hockey game on the 10th and even gave us a tour of the arena! Thanks, Bro. Jonny!
Our first Stated will be our Annual Communicationon December 7th which will be our election night as well as committee reports. Please attend not only to let your voices be heard but also to support our newly elected officers. Please RSVP.
My final meeting as Master will be on December 21st. As it has become customary, this meeting will be an Agape Dinner and my chance to say goodbye and thank you for the honor of serving the Lodge this past year. I hope you have all enjoyed it as much as I have. Dinner promises to be excellent and there will be a commemorative glass for those who attend. Open to Masons only, please. E.A and above. We will hold a brief meeting open on the E.A. degree ta 5:30 pm. The 6:30 pm dinner will be catered and glasses are limited so please RSVP.
The Installation Night for the 2018 officers will be held at 6:30 pm on Saturday, December 30th. The installation and dinner will be open to the public. Please RSVP.
For those of you who missed our last Stated, the Lodge once again voted to sponsor a couple tables at the Denver Consistory Burns Night Supper on Saturday, January 20th, 2018. We will cover your meal which begins at 7:00 pm. If you’d like to participate in the Whisky College which starts at 6 pm, then you must reserve with the Consistory yourself and pay the $15 fee. Space for the dinner is limited, so if you’d like to attend and join our tables please RSVP with me. First come first serve.
